Millions of Americans are expected to lose coverage due to Medicare and Medicaid cuts. But a few companies have rolled out ways for you to save money without using health insurance.
If you feel your dollars are not going the distance, you're not alone. That's because everything from services, food and products cost more, and prescription medication is no exception.
According to the most recent report released by the National Center for Health Statistics, about 60% of adults reported taking at least one prescription medication, with 36% taking three or more. But due to medication costs, 8.2% of adults, 18 through 64, stop taking them.
And those costs are a burden for many.
IQVIA, an analytics firm, reported this past April that over half of new prescriptions for novel medicines go unfilled largely due to their insurance plan coverage and high costs.
So how can you regain your purchasing power? It all starts with knowing where to shop.
“You can save up to 80% on thousands of generic medications if you use PrimeRX,” Natasha Bhuyan with Amazon One Health said.
PrimeRX will automatically apply eligible coupons at checkout with a list of price comparisons and discounts without the need of insurance.
For even more savings, add RxPass to your Prime membership.
“And RxPass is a subscription program. You pay $5 a month, and you're able to get access to unlimited medications from a list of 60 medications,” Bhuyan said.
Mark Cuban’s Cost Plus Drug Company is another option for people without insurance or a high deductible.
The company's mission makes medication more affordable by removing the middleman and adding transparency to the process.
So how do they price their medications?
By marking up 15 % of the manufacturing price, adding $5 for pharmacy labor cost, and an additional $5 for shipping.
On their site, you can search medications, get a detailed list of the forms of medication available, along with a price comparison on retail versus their cost.
Once you confirm the medication you need is available on their site, have your doctor send the prescription, place your order, and receive it by mail.
Another way to save and find the best deals near you is through GoodRx.
The free app helps you compare medication prices at retail stores near you and find coupon information and get the lowest retail price possible.
And if you like to shop for your medications at a brick-and-mortar store, you can still save with your Amazon Prime membership.
PrimeRx unlocks discounts and prescriptions at nearly 60,000 pharmacies, not just Amazon's pharmacy.
This includes CVS, Walgreens, and Costco, among others.
